Observatory for Social and Economic Development in the Basque Country

Report Gaindegia 2007: Prologue

Koldo Saratxaga, former director of Irizar and business management consultant, analyses what the economy has offered us in 2007, making some predictions for the future.

Advance:

"... Thinking in the longer term, which does not seem to figure politically, there are two problems, which could be seen as two opportunities for our country to nurture: education and immigration.

We cannot hope to be the European benchmark in anything, competing countries such as Finland, Sweden, etc. who are decades ahead of us in terms of educational models.

On the other hand, we cannot and we must not make the same mistakes as other neighbouring countries on the issue of immigrants. In the Basque Country, which I insist is a small country which must create its own skills, we have a serious population aging problem, and if we have serious problems today to find skilled workers for many different jobs, it will only get worse over the next few years, taking into account thousands of future substitutions in the civil service.
Therefore, we must sustain the future with educational models in line with present and future needs and make it easier to integrate immigrants according to our own needs."
